TANGIER
Tangiers can be reached either from Algeciras or from Tarifa via a beautiful crossing of the Straits of Gibraltar with spectacular views of the Spanish coast in one direction and Morocco in the other. As you arrive at the port of Tangiers you have a magnificent view of the Medina, or historic centre, occupying one of the many hills upon which the city is built. A city of great contrasts between the modern neighbourhoods, erected during the international period of the city, and the ancient kasbah and medina.
The kasbah is the fort which in times gone by used to protect the medina. The Tangier medina is a real labyrinth of narrow cobbled streets with a multitude of every type of shop and a bustle of people rummaging amongst the great variety of goods for sale. It is a place to have tea with mint and try the local cuisine.
Some of the bazaars, where you can find every type of Moroccan handicraft, are well worth visiting.
